About Betty Boop, Bimbo, Koko, and Max Fleischer

Betty Boop is a Max Fleischer creation from the 1930's and was considered VERY racy at the time. In fact, it was so racy that in later episodes the censorship board forced Fleischer to draw Betty in less scantily clad attire, which is a shame for all of us Boop lovers. As a result, the later episodes lost a lot of the character that early episodes exhibited. So if you are interested in watching Betty Boop cartoons, to which I'll provide the links below, I recommend the early episodes that exhibited Boop in all her risque glory!

Max Fleischer was an innovator from the start. He invented rotoscoping and used the concept by integrating his brother Dave's live action antics into a cartoon, Dave was to become Koko the clown. He was also the first to produce a sound cartoon - it wasn't Disney! Besides Betty Boop he went on to produce Popeye the Sailor and Superman.

If you watch any of the Betty Boop shorts (which I do recommend) you will notice a seamless integration of music with bizarre animation and rotoscoped live action footage. The racier episodes suggest alcohol use, drug use, and sex. Given that all the early episodes are syncronized to wicked music by Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong, and other contemporary musicians, that makes Betty Boop the first condoner of Sex, Drugs, and Rock'n Roll!

Max Fleischer Footage Used in Skipping Rope of Daisies

Betty Boop is in the public domain - a remnant of times when copyright laws were less nasty than they are today. Given that some of these episodes were created around the same time as Mickey the Mouse, Mickey should also be in the public domain by now if it weren't for the rabid lobbying and protection by it's creator Disney, a large contributor to the increasingly repressive copyright regime we have today. Oh, sorry, ranting's for another day!

Betty Boop footage used in Skipping Rope of Daisies (in order of recommended viewing) all links open in popup window:

1) Betty Boop: Snow White (1933) featuring Cab Calloway. 'Snow' aka cocaine...haha I get it.
2) Betty Boop in Blunderland. I can't find this one on archive.org anymore - a shame because it's a wicked Boop episode.
3) Betty Boop: Bamboo Isle (1932) featuring Royal Samoans
4) Betty Boop: Minnie The Moocher (1932) featuring Cab Calloway
5) Betty Boop: I'll Be Glad When You're Dead, You Rascal You (1932) featuring Louis Armstrong
6) Betty Boop And The Little King (1936). This one shows what happens to Betty Boop when she stops using booze and drugs and puts on a pantssuit. It ain't pretty.
