Who or What Are Wilco?
Wilco are a fabulously melodic and musically challenging band. Sometimes folksy in feel, always pushing the envelope of music, they should be in everyone's CD collection.
Wilco Music Everyone Should Own
For the following write-ups I've linked to the CDs on Amazon so you can listen to samples and/or buy the albums if the mood should hit you (links open a pop-up window to Amazon.)
Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
has gone down in history as the album that almost wasn't. Rejected by their record label at the time as needing 'further refinement,' the band refused
to change anything and the album ended up in limbo. Wilco was released from their record contract and shopped it around to other labels. It was, ironically, picked up
by a subsidiary of the same record label that refused to release it. This is Wilco at their best, a fabulously melodic and quirky album from start to finish. Stand out tracks...
the whole bloddy thing, I kid you not...if I were pressed I'd probably say Kamera, War on War, Heavy Metal Drummer, and I'm the Man Who Loves You were my favorites.
Mermaid Avenue Vol. II
is a personal favorite. Less experimental with a definitive 'folksy' feel than other Wilco endeavours. The album features music provided by Billy Bragg and Wilco
with lyrics writen by Woody Guthrie. For those that search for lyrical depth to their music this would be a great Wilco album to start out with.
Standout tracks: Airline to Heaven, My Flying Saucer, Freed of Man, Secrets of the Sea, Blood of the Lamb, Aginst' the Law, Meanest Man, and Black Wind Blowing.
I am Trying to Break Your Heart - a film about the making of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Shot in Black & White, the film gives the viewer the sense that they are watching history in the making. The film is an unfiltered view of Wilco and Jeff Tweedy himself and includes some unflattering footage of Tweedy and Jay Bennett, Jay's antics eventually leading to his expulsion from the band. If you are a Wilco fan, this DVD really gives you a glimpse into the inner workings of the band and the ironic history of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.
