Daisies of the Galaxy
was recorded in 2000, one short year before the phenomenal SoulJacker. It marks a significant departure from where E left off with 1998's Electro-shock Blues providing more 'upbeat' music.
An interesting tidbit - this album was actually referenced by the ultimate Dick (ya, Dick Cheney, the dood that shot someone in the face on a hunting expedition) as an example of music
that is leading children astray with blatant naughty words. I guess it's because of the track It's A Motherfucker. Leave to Phallus (I mean Dick) to miss the point of the music.
Key Daisies of the Galaxy Tracks
Flyswatter
It's the keyboard riff that makes Flyswatter flow, it's slightly creepy yet melodic. The lyrics deal with overcoming fears with whatever crutch happens to be handy (ice water, flyswatter.) Overall, they're light and fun "Little field mice living under the house, never eating much, tough life for a mouse. And if you think you're gonna be spared, you're wrong." I also dig the percussion and the 'breakdown' in the song around 2 minutes in. You'll like this tune on the first spin.
Mr E's Beautiful Blues
A simple song musically and lyrically and opens with what just might be a sample from "Sound of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkel but I can't help but love this song. Whenever things are shitty, when it's overcast, when some jackass pissed on your cheerios, when you are coated with mud by a carelessly driven passing car, just put this tune on and crank it to max and life's problems will melt away. I'm serious. U2 tried to do something similar with their 'Beautiful Day' track but where they failed, E succeeded admirably. Goddam right, it's a beautiful day, uh-huh.
I Like Birds
I Like Birds is E dipping into lyrically absurdity in a good way. All the crappy things that comes with civilization - the smoke, sheeplike people, people that act like turds, traffic - all that doesn't matter cause E 'likes birds.' The lyrics are hilarious, "If you're small and on a search, I've got a feeder for you to perch on." Musically there's a lot of tasty things going on - I Like Birds is another one of the Eels instantly likeable songs.
The Sound of Fear
Here-in lies some of the tastiest organ/keyboard playing and riffs I have heard in a long time. It's the organ man, the organ. It's all about the organ.
