Who or What Are the Eels?

The Eels are a revolving door of musicians lead by the multi-instrumentalist and song writer Mark Oliver Everett, or simply 'E'. Their music has evolved over their existence making them close to uncategorizable, and depends largely upon which album or era you are talking about.

The Eels music always has a melodic quality to it, even when E is experimenting with noises and sounds that "make the listener check to see if something is wrong with the stereo" (from a BBC interview with the Eels.) E has dipped his finger into every genre including folk, country, heavy rock, electronic, dance, DJ based loops (hip hop?), noise, and orchestral.

One thing I have never understood are the endless comparisons to Beck. First of all, Beck's a Scientologist which points to his limited intellect. Second of all, the Eels are way more diverse musically and lyrically than Beck could ever hope to be.

note: the above excludes three of the four live albums Eels Oh What A Beautiful Morning (2000), Electro-shock Blues Show (2002), and Sixteen Tons (2003). We included Eels With Strings because, having attended an Eels With Strings show live in Vancouver, we know that it represents a significant and major shift in musical direction for the band. Thus, it stands on its own and the songs on it will be significantly different from the studio versions...which, given we are talking about the music of the Eels, is usually the case. Look, we're just trying to say it's REALLY different from the rest. That's it. Really.
