Music Sites we Endorse

I am using the term "Music Site" to capture all sites that allow you to register your band and then to offer your music for streaming or download. The key to whether we endorse them is that they are free and that they allow you to retain control over your music. Some are better than others - better designed, better techniques for finding artists, etc. But, basically, as long as the site meets those two criteria we will register our band with them to solve problem three, increasing visitors to our site.

1) Independent Artists Company
Kind of a poorly designed site, but really cool in that users of the site can create radio stations of the tunes uploaded there. Allows both streaming and downloads.

3) Download.com
Download.com allows both streaming and downloads of your music. If you're lucky, like we were, an editor will dig your music and select it as an editor's pick!

2) Zed TV
Canada's answer to independent music. This site has a TV show tie in which could mean great exposure for your band. It's also a very cool community. On the downside, any content you post there is downloadable.

3) Garage Band
Garage Band allows both streaming and downloads and links into CD Baby (if you have a CD listed for sale.) After doing some work for the man (in the form of reviews) you earn an upload credit. Once uploaded you will get a plethora of unbiased 3rd party reviews of your tune. It's pretty cool to hear what some people say about your music - some are bang on and some seem to have smoked something prior to writing the review.

4) Music Freedom
Music Freedom offers streamed samples of your music and allows users to purchase your music if they like what they hear from which you earn $0.45 per download. It's a good idea but in order to succeed in the community to have to kiss every other artist's ass turning it into a popularity contest rather than a meritocracy.

5) My Space
Once again, this site is a popularity contest. How many friends do you have? How many spams can you send in a day to get people to check you out. Like music freedom, I just don't dig anything that promotes spamming. Still, no harm in sticking music up there!

6) CanadianMusic.com
Create an artist page with song uploads that allow streaming or downloading of your music. There are user created radio stations.
